Hiking - Walking: Plateau de Buerre ridge walk, Rousset Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny but breezy Max Speed: Distance Covered: 4.3miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Thursday 1st October – hike ***** - sunny but breezy – Plateau de
Buerre ridge walk, Rousset – 4.30 miles, 4.5hrs out.
Nice day but chilly so we packed up before breakfast and drove the four
miles through the tunnel and up the road through the ski station and up to
the plateau de Beurre. We parked up in the big car park and had breakfast
overlooking a new valley and I did my exercises. Mag had a day off!
Packed our lunch and set off on a hike up through the trees and out onto
the Plateau. We were up there yesterday but approached it from a different
direction. This time we were on the left hand side of the plateau and as
we walked up we were surprised to see a house with three goats sitting
outside in the sun. It is right up where the skiing happens so whether
they live there in the winter we don’t know! We ate our lunch right on
the edge of the cliff, leaning against the cairn of rocks. The vultures
gave us a fine display again and you always feel they have their beady eyes
on you just to make sure you are still breathing!! They don’t flap their
wings at all, just jump off the cliff ledges and glide. The only time they
flex their wings is to lose height! We read our books and had a good rest
in the sun. The wind is really quite strong and cold in places but we were
out of it there and it was lovely. Carried on right on the edge of the
cliffs until we met up with yesterday’s walk. At the chair lift we took
the fork to the right and carried on down the piste to the ski car park.
There are quite a few runs and even some free cross country up here so we
are very keen to come back in March. Excellent walk, nearly as far as
yesterday! We were out for 4 ½ hours. We had thought we would get back
and move on but we decided we were too tired so relaxed back at the van and
are staying here. We played first round of phase 10 this holiday and Mag
won!!

Friday 2nd October – Shop, sightsee and littlewalk – cloudy and wet
:(
A rainy day today :( After breakfast we packed up and drove back down all
the hairpin bends to Die hoping to get stamps for the postcards we wrote
last Friday(!) and maybe find a McDonalds for some wifi as we are not
missing any adventures in this weather! We parked on the outskirts of Die
and walked in (it had stopped raining for a while:)) and found the Tourist
information where a woman with a terrible cough gave us many leaflets.
Unfortunately none of them were exactly what we wanted but never mind. We
walked through the town and didn’t see the post office but got some
stamps in a Tabac. We walked up and round the back of the ramparts but
they were a little disappointing, just grey stone walls which may or may
not be Roman. We did get a fine display of acrobatics from a red squirrel
though:) Back to the van and a quick trip into Lidl and to fill up with
diesel at the Intermarche. No McDonalds in sight. We then went back up the
hairpins to the Col du Rousset for our lunch (Lidl cooked chicken on offer
at under 3 euros!). We drove up the valley we could see from our parking
place last night and saw a field of sheep being guarded by two of the white
shaggy sheep dogs. Stopped for a quick look at the grottes which looked
quite interesting but they are only open at weekends in the autumn.
Carried on up through a heavily forested road to the cross country skiing
area of Herbouilly. It is a very strange place all trees and plateau with
nowhere to stop really. Followed a sign to the Chateau Julien which turned
out to be a car park for a walk across the plateau to a table of
orientation and belvedere. It was raining too much to get out when we
first arrived but at around 6.30 we set off and were treated to a beautiful
sky over the forest to a white cloud filled valley with further views over
to where we were over the last few days and even over to La Scia at St.
Pierre! With the weather we have had today you can’t believe you can see
anything up there so it was a treat. Just as we were walking down the
track a big deer was standing in the middle but shot off when he saw us:)
No vultures today – too wet for soaring the cliffs!
Saturday 3rd October – Relaxing start then wi-fi outside Villard Tourist
Office + sightseeing – Foul, wet and windy :(
Woke up to blue skies but slept late and by the time we did our exercises
it had clouded over and was raining again. Another van had arrived after we
went to bed and the young couple had a quick walk and disappeared back down
the forest track. We had breakfast and soon followed them! Arrived at
Villard de Lans which is a ski town below the forest. As it was lunchtime
and chucking it down no shops were open but we put cagoules on and had a
wander – not a bad place, with a few interesting shops. Got free wifi at
the tourist information car park so were able to sit in the van and catch
up with all the usual computer stuff. Got some leaflets and maps when they
opened at 2. There is supposed to be a balloon festival here this weekend
and it is such a shame the weather has let them down so badly:( We went
for a ride up to the Le Balcon, Les Glovettes and Correncon en Vercors ski
areas on the outskirts before returning to the town and parking in a quiet
car park near where the balloons are due to launch tomorrow if the weather
improves. There is a small stream running behind the van which may become
quite noisy with all this rain! It teemed all evening while we ate tea,
played cards, and read our books.
